Mention of spearmint dates back to at least the 1st century AD. it's derived from species of mint originating from the Mediterranean region. Spearmint was widely used in Greece. It was also used to scent bath water, clear the voice and cure hiccups.
In addition to one of the oldest surviving medical texts in the world, the ancient Egyptian Ebers Papyrus from 1550 BC, cites mint as a digestive and a tool to soothe flatulence.
